Dean of Students Emergency Scholarship

The Dean of Students Emergency Scholarship is available to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students at UNM experiencing the following personal* emergency circumstances:

  • Homelessness
  • Eviction
  • Utility shut-off
  • Emergency moving expenses (deposits, moving truck, etc.)
  • Transportation (vehicle repair, plane ticket, etc.)
  • Death in the family
  • Medical expenses
  • Phone bill
  • Purchase of computer

Additional circumstances may be considered at the discretion of program staff.

The maximum amount for this award is $1,000. Award amounts may be less than $1,000 depending on supporting documentation and need.

Undergraduate Eligibility Requirements

  • A 2.0 or higher GPA
  • Current enrollment at UNM for at least 6 credit hours
  • First semester undergraduate students are ineligible for the scholarship. At least one prior semester of coursework at UNM is required.
  • Eligibility is limited to one (1) scholarship every two (2) academic years.

Graduate Eligibility Requirements

  • A 3.0 or higher GPA for non-Law students (2.0 or higher for Law students)
  • Domestic students must be currently enrolled at UNM for at least half-time enrollment (6 credit hours). International students must be full time or carry six (6) credit hours plus an assistantship of at least .25 FTE. 
  • Summer enrollment is not required for Summer scholarship applications from graduate students. However, applicants must have been enrolled in the previous Spring semester (at least half-time; international students either full time or enrolled in 6 credit hours with an assistantship of at least .25 FTE) and must be enrolled in the upcoming Fall semester. 
  • First semester graduate students are ineligible for the scholarship. At least one prior semester of coursework at UNM is required. 
  • Eligibility is limited to one (1) scholarship per two (2) academic years. 

Additional Eligibility Information

  • Regular full- or part-time UNM faculty or staff members are not eligible for the Dean of Students Emergency Scholarship. Student employees, work-study students, and graduate assistants are eligible. 
  • Students at all UNM campuses are eligible.

International Status

International students are eligible for the Dean of Students Emergency Scholarship. However, please note that all awards are subject to foreign taxation of approximately 30%. All awards to international students will be less than the stated amount at the time of application approval, so please plan accordingly. 


Application Process

1. To submit your application, supporting documentation is required. For example, an eviction notice, medical billing statement, letter from a case worker, quote or estimate of cost, death certificate, etc. should be submitted for review. 

2. Applications will be reviewed within 1-2 business days. 

3. Approval or denial will be provided via email. 

4. Award will arrive via direct deposit within 2-5 business days. 


FAQs

While loans must be paid back at the end of the borrowing period, scholarships (including the Dean of Students Emergency Scholarship) do not need to be paid back.
We encourage you to apply even if your emergency is not listed above. Our reviewers will determine if an unlisted circumstance meets scholarship eligibility. Please provide as much detail as possible in your application.

Scholarship amounts may vary. In general, students should expect to receive the amount that best fits their primary need. Scholarships of $1,000 are not guaranteed. If you believe your approved scholarship award is insufficient and would like to request additional funds, please contact the Dean of Students Office for instructions.
Yes, and we encourage you to do so if you are experiencing a qualifying emergency. Rejections may be due to a variety of issues including eligibility, completeness, documentation, etc. Some reasons for rejection are easily fixed by providing additional information within a new application.
The Dean of Students Office has a number of financial aid options, including our Short-Term Loan program. We are happy to pair you with an alternative that best fits your needs. We may identify a program with a better fit during application review, so please monitor your UNM email closely for communication from us.
Scholarship funds will be deposited to you directly. They are not intended to pay off any charges to your Bursar's Account. If your scholarship does pay off charges to your Bursar's Account, please let us know right away. For students who do not have a personal direct deposit account set up: please note that your funds may be disbursed to a parent or guardian's account if that is how you normally receive financial aid refunds from the University.
Yes! We do not consider past-due balances as part of Emergency Scholarship eligibility. However, funds may not be used to pay a past-due balance with UNM.

 

*Under certain circumstances, funds may be approved for expenses that are not your own but directly benefit your ability to pursue your higher education. These expenses may include requests for funds that will help you maintain your housing, such as housing provided by a family member or guardian, and other basic necessities such as transportation, groceries for your family/household, etc. Please provide appropriate documentation.
